Demystifying Kubernetes for Enterprise Developers Kubernetes is an open source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. Kubernetes was originally built by Google, leveraging years of experience with managing container workloads, and is now a Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) project. Kubernetes has been widely adopted by the community, supported on all major public and private cloud providers, and is gaining rapid adoption in enterprises. However, Kubernetes may seem intimidating and complex to learn. This is because Kubernetes is more of a toolset than a ready solution. Hence it's essential to know when and how to apply the appropriate Kubernetes constructs. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Jim Bugwadia, founder and CEO at Nirmata, will cover all Kubernetes concepts that are important to devel... (more)

Keynote at @CloudExpo | @TheEbizWizard #BigData #DigitalTransformation

In today's enterprise, digital transformation represents organizational change even more so than technology change, as customer preferences and behavior drive end-to-end transformation across lines of business as well as IT. To capitalize on the ubiquitous disruption driving this transformation, companies must be able to innovate at an increasingly rapid pace. Traditional approaches for driving innovation are now woefully inadequate for keeping up with the breadth of disruption and change facing today's increasingly digital enterprise. It's time to rethink how we innovate, leveraging the very turbulence that drives the business to change. In his Opening Keynote at 17th Cloud Expo, Jason Bloomberg, leading expert on architecting agility for the enterprise and  president of Intellyx, provided a thought-provoking look at how modern digital practices, including self-or... James Turner's Linux Laptop Journey - The Adventure Continues...

You may recall that earlier this month, I told a tale of woe and distress, centered around my inability to get a critical set of functionalities running on my not-so-old Toshiba laptop under Linux. For those who might be curious as to how things have progressed since then, I offer a status update. If you don't recall my travails, they centered around getting an 802.11g PCMCIA card and DVD playback working reliably on my Toshiba 1805-S204 Celeron laptop. After trying numerous out-of-the-box distributions, some of which claimed to have excellent laptop support, I had yet to find a distribution for which everything I needed worked at the end of an install. Either the network card, the sound driver, or some other critical piece of technology always seemed to be broken at the end of the day. I had also flailed around with trying to patch my kernel or install new drivers,... (more)

Wall Street, Oracle and Game Theory

Wall Street The folks over at RHAT haven’t wasted time putting me to work. I just spent two weeks working with investors, touring with Dion Cornett, the VP of Investors Relations. I don’t know how he does it. I used to see investors as a private company, mainly due to the impact we had on public companies at the time, but nothing like what I went through recently -- roughly 60 investors in three days. Summarizing the state of the company in 40 minutes slots was a learning experience. The message needs to be fairly simple, which is probably why it works. Essentially RHAT/JBoss is a new company. The association of the RHAT brand is not to a given market, say Linux, but rather to the business model that backs it up. The business model of OSS has been proven by RHAT over the years. It is time to generalize it to other markets, be it Middleware or most of infrastructure... (more)

IBM Linux-OpenOffice Desktop offering - history repeating

My colleague, Paula Rooney, recently posted IBM launches first Linux-OpenOffice desktop with virtualization features that pointed out that IBM is having a go at pushing Microsoft’s Windows off of corporate desktops once again. Although the technology is different this time around, the concept is the same. “What are you talking about?” I can hear some [...] ... (more)

Sun CEO Reviews Company's Prospects for 2009-10

Sun's CEO Jonathan Schwartz has been reviewing Sun's three major strategic imperatives, and the company's progress going in to its next fiscal year. As industry blogs go, the three entries he's produced so far are miniature masterpieces. A fourth and last one is on its way. The first in the series, titled "Understanding Sun in Three Easy Steps," kicks off with the bright and breezy intro: "We're approaching the end of our fiscal year, and given all the swirl in the economy, I thought it worthwhile to restate where Sun's headed as a company, to let customers, partners, employees and investors see and understand where we're headed. Clarity's always useful, doubly so in times of uncertainty." But it isn't long before Schwartz shows us how he's earned his reputation as one of the industry's most insightful bloggers, with a natural ear for a ringing phrase: "I'm neither wo... (more)

Oracle Maps Its Cloud Computing Strategy During Cloud Expo Keynote

Oracle Keynote at Cloud Expo 2010 "We've been fairly quiet," said Rex Wang, VP of Infrastructure and Management at Oracle, as he gave the Morning Keynote at the Cloud Expo at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. Wang was referring to Oracle's relative silence to date vis-a-vis Cloud Computing. His intention, he said, was to share with the assembled delegates Oracle's thoughts on the space... Rex Wang with Jeremy Geelan, Cloud Expo Conference Chair, during his keynote at the Santa Clara Convention Center According to IDC, Wang notes, Cloud-related spending constitutes only only 5% of total IT spending in 2009, which in four years will double to 10%...but even so, 90% will still be "traditional" IT spending. Oracle is the exclusive Diamond Sponsor of the upcoming Cloud Expo, which will take place April 19-21, 2010, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center i... (more)

How to Truly Implement the Internet of Things

My colleague, mobility and IoT (Internet of Things) guru Peter Rogers has written one of the first articles I have ever read that explains how consulting companies and developers can truly design, implement and support the Internet of Things ecosystem.  Mark your calendars with this historic day. I was talking with friends today about the whole notion of wearable technology and soon stumbled upon the following important question, "What does a consultancy actually bring to the table in terms of wearable technologies?" My opinion is that it is not about writing software for Google Glass, which seems to be the first thing anybody does at the mention of wearable technology. I mean firstly it is not (officially) on sale in Europe inside a retail outlet and secondly it does not actually have an official App Store.  I believe it is more about the hardware, the life cycle m... CloudEXPO Stories
Digital transformation has increased the pace of business creating a productivity divide between the technology haves and have nots. Managing financial information on spreadsheets and piecing together insight from numerous disconnected systems is no longer an option. Rapid market changes and aggressive competition are motivating business leaders to reevaluate legacy technology investments in search of modern technologies to achieve greater agility, reduced costs and organizational efficiencies. In this session, learn how today's business leaders are managing finance in the cloud and the essential steps required to get on the right path to creating an agile, efficient and future-ready business.
CI/CD is conceptually straightforward, yet often technically intricate to implement since it requires time and opportunities to develop intimate understanding on not only DevOps processes and operations, but likely product integrations with multiple platforms. This session intends to bridge the gap by offering an intense learning experience while witnessing the processes and operations to build from zero to a simple, yet functional CI/CD pipeline integrated with Jenkins, Github, Docker and Azure.
Fact: storage performance problems have only gotten more complicated, as applications not only have become largely virtualized, but also have moved to cloud-based infrastructures. Storage performance in virtualized environments isn’t just about IOPS anymore. Instead, you need to guarantee performance for individual VMs, helping applications maintain performance as the number of VMs continues to go up in real time. In his session at Cloud Expo, Dhiraj Sehgal, Product and Marketing at Tintri, shared success stories from a few folks who have already started using VM-aware storage. By managing storage operations at the VM-level, they’ve been able to solve their most vexing storage problems, and create infrastructures that scale to meet the needs of their applications. Best of all, they’ve got predictable, manageable storage performance – at a level conventional storage can’t match. ...
"We do one of the best file systems in the world. We learned how to deal with Big Data many years ago and we implemented this knowledge into our software," explained Jakub Ratajczak, Business Development Manager at MooseFS, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
Traditional IT, great for stable systems of record, is struggling to cope with newer, agile systems of engagement requirements coming straight from the business. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, William Morrish, General Manager of Product Sales at Interoute, will outline ways of exploiting new architectures to enable both systems and building them to support your existing platforms, with an eye for the future. Technologies such as Docker and the hyper-convergence of computing, networking and storage creates a platform for consolidation, migration and enabling digital transformation.
