Factors driving this growth, according to the report include "demand from developers for access to and control of source code as permitted by the open source software model, an increasing number of experienced Linux programmers, and Wind River's entry into the Linux market in late 2004.
VDC says that MontaVista Linux was the leading embedded Linux OS provider in 2004, though the entry of Wind River is expected to "considerably impact the competitive landscape."
Embedded Linux is, not surprisingly, also playing an increasing role in the defense industry, according to the report,w tih companies such as Lockheed Martin deploying it.
The report also notes that "concerns over intellectual property protection" and the inevitable worries about competition from Microsoft may hinder the growth of Linux in embedded markets in the longer term.
