VMware & Canonical Buddy Up on OpenStack

The Canonical distribution now has plug-ins so OpenStack will work with VMware’s stuff

VMware and Linux house Canonical are collaborating so users can deploy VMware widgetry such as vSphere and Nicira Network Virtualization Platform (NVP) with Canonical's OpenStack distribution.

The Canonical distribution is called the Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure and it's supposed to be the most widely used version of OpenStack.

The Canonical distribution now has plug-ins so OpenStack will work with VMware's stuff.

In an intuitively unnatural move - since VMware is an OpenStack rival - so it must be hedging its bets - VMware contributed code to the new Grizzly release of OpenStack so that the Nova compute platform in OpenStack can support vSphere.

Under their deal Canonical will handle commercial support for OpenStack and work with VMware on any issues related to vSphere or NVP running on OpenStack.

They will collaborate on software testing, deployment automation, customer support and reference designs.

VMware also reaffirmed its support for Ubuntu as a fully supported guest operating system on vSphere so "customers can run production workloads at the highest virtual machine densities on the world's most battle-tested hypervisor platform."

According to a statement made by Canonical's senior VP of sales and business development Chris Kenyon "This joint offering will be a fully supported and certified solution for OpenStack cloud infrastructure that uses VMware hypervisors for compute, combining existing vSphere real estate with Ubuntu's category-leading OpenStack distribution."

VMware joined the OpenStack Foundation last September. Nicira folk were part of the Quantum effort to cut out the networking in OpenStack into a separate component.
