MongoDB Named Database Management System of 2013

Ongoing Technology Adoption and Growing Partner Ecosystem Drive Record Growth

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 01/07/14 -- MongoDB today announced that it has been named "Database Management System of the Year" by DB-Engines, an online initiative to collect and present information about database management systems. In addition to faster adoption than any other database, MongoDB is also the highest ranked NoSQL database, and is now more popular than traditional systems, such as Microsoft Access, SQLite and Sybase, according to DB-Engines.

"DB-Engines.com congratulates MongoDB for an outstanding increase in its popularity in 2013," said Matthias Gelbmann of DB-Engines. "We see in our measurements that people increasingly talk about MongoDB, more and more companies ask for MongoDB skills in their job postings, and more people include MongoDB skills in their professional profiles. We interpret this as a sign that the interest in MongoDB will be lasting, and it's much more than just hype. This is a remarkable achievement for such a young product."

MongoDB's position as the Database Management System of the Year follows the company's most successful year to date. In 2013, MongoDB's partner ecosystem tripled in size, reflecting 350 partners, and includes strategic alliances forged with many of the world's leading companies, such as Amazon Web Services, Cloudera, IBM, Informatica, Intel, Microsoft, Microstrategy, Rackspace and Red Hat.

In September, MongoDB announced a $150 million funding round with top-tier investors, making it the most funded technology in the Big Data market. This investment is being used to further invest in the core MongoDB project and to support the fastest-growing community in Big Data throughout the world.

"The industry is ready for innovation -- NoSQL databases are profoundly changing how businesses are built and run, and it's happening faster than anyone could have predicted," said Max Schireson, CEO of MongoDB. "Together, with our growing network of customers, partners and the developer community, we are excited to build the database powering today's most innovative applications and will continue to set the standard for data management for years to come."

2013 Momentum and Milestones:

  • The leading NoSQL database for startups and enterprises, MongoDB has amassed more than 900 customers, including 27 Fortune 100 companies. Significant customers include CARFAX, Cisco, eBay, eHarmony, MetLife, Salesforce.com and Telefonica;
  • Released MongoDB 2.4, with new capabilities including hash-based sharding, capped arrays, text search and geospatial enhancements;
  • Enhanced MongoDB products and services to include MongoDB Enterprise, MongoDB Connector for Hadoop, Product Launch Services and a fully-managed backup service as part of MongoDB Management Service (MMS);
  • MongoDB University, the company's successful online learning platform, amassed 145,000 online registrations and doubled the number of courses available, launched On-Demand Education, certification for developers and DBAs and courses in multiple languages;
  • Fastest-growing community in Big Data, with more than 130 user groups and 28,000 user group members around the world;
  • More than 6.5 million downloads of MongoDB;
  • Honored for impressive leadership and software innovation with industry accolades, including the Linux Journal's 2013 Readers' Choice Award. Developers selected MongoDB as their favorite NoSQL database for the second straight year, garnering 43.6% of all votes in 2013, roughly triple the next nearest competitor, compared to 33.4% in 2012.

Globally, MongoDB has attracted senior talent, including CFO Sydney Carey and APAC General Manager Kamal Brar, and continues to hire aggressively. The company more than doubled in size in 2013 to more than 350 employees.

In addition to dual U.S. headquarters in New York and Palo Alto, Calif., MongoDB announced EMEA headquarters in Dublin and APAC headquarters in Singapore. New offices include Atlanta, Ga.; Barcelona, Spain; New Delhi, India; Reston, Va. and Sydney, Australia, for a total of 11 offices worldwide.

In addition to all the benefits, IoT is also bringing new kind of customer experience challenges - cars that unlock themselves, thermostats turning houses into saunas and baby video monitors broadcasting over the internet. This list can only increase because while IoT services should be intuitive and simple to use, the delivery ecosystem is a myriad of potential problems as IoT explodes complexity. So finding a performance issue is like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack.
