The release of these numbers coincides with new NGINX version releases 1.6 and 1.7, (stable and mainline, respectively) as of today, which can be found here: http://www.nginx.org.

Factors that have played an important role in the software's unprecedented growth include NGINX, Inc.'s ongoing, strong investment in the F/OSS community and the company's commitment to advancing the performance of global websites and web applications.

NGINX' place as the most widely used technology for application and website acceleration has been bolstered by several recent milestones this year, including:

  • 2013-2014 Key product features and upgrades: Support for SPDY, multiple feature extensions and enhancements for F/OSS (including the version 1.6 and 1.7 launched today), greater compatibility running NGINX on Amazon EC2 and WebSocket functionality.
  • NGINX notable user roster: Groupon, Living Social, WordPress.com, Netflix, Pinterest, Tumblr, SoundCloud, Yandex and Zappos, to name a few.

"We've had a great twelve months and v1.6 and 1.7 updates are just the beginning of another successful year," said Gus Robertson, CEO of NGINX. "With a strong commitment to our open-source user community, we have some major features planned that will help our users continue to benefit from NGINX's expertise in high-performance web application delivery."

Looking ahead to the remainder of 2014, several important developments outline NGINX' roadmap, including:

  • Architectural improvements.  The NGINX code base will be able to take advantage of maturing features in the Linux kernel.  This will be particularly useful to organizations serving or caching very large volumes of content.
  • Centralized management tools that will provide a focus for a richer and more informed NGINX user community.  Management tools will assist NGINX users in managing and monitoring larger estates of NGINX instances.  This will make it simpler to connect with the community of NGINX experts.
  • A third-party module API that will allow for dynamic loading of modules.  This will make it easier for NGINX users to keep up with NGINX development and run the most recent releases to take advantage of new features and other improvements.  It will also make it easier for 3rd party developers to build and package NGINX extensions.

NGINX Inc., also offers NGINX Plus which adds advanced features and 24/7 support to improve the management and delivery of enterprise-class web applications in production environments.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Cloud computing delivers on-demand resources that provide businesses with flexibility and cost-savings. The challenge in moving workloads to the cloud has been the cost and complexity of ensuring the initial and ongoing security and regulatory (PCI, HIPAA, FFIEC) compliance across private and public clouds. Manual security compliance is slow, prone to human error, and represents over 50% of the cost of managing cloud applications. Determining how to automate cloud security compliance is critical...
Enterprises have taken advantage of IoT to achieve important revenue and cost advantages. The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more.
