6WIND, Avaya and H3C Join the OpenDaylight Project

Member Organizations Join Industry's Largest Open Source SDN and NFV Project to Advance Code Development and Adoption

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/30/14 -- The OpenDaylight Project, a community-led and industry-supported open source platform to advance Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), today announced that 6WIND, Avaya and H3C are joining the project to advance the development and widespread deployment of open SDN and NFV. Project membership has doubled since launching 12 months ago and the OpenDaylight community has grown to more than 170 developers.

"There is a critical mass forming around open source and open systems in the networking industry. People know openness is the right path forward for SDN and NFV and that it will pave the way for real innovation in IT," said Neela Jacques, executive director, OpenDaylight. "It's been an amazing first year for OpenDaylight and we look forward to a really productive second year as the community grows and evolves the OpenDaylight platform. We thank our newest members for their support."

About the newest OpenDaylight Project members:

6WIND delivers commercial software that solves performance challenges for network vendors in telecom, enterprise and cloud infrastructure markets. The company's packet processing software is optimized for cost-effective hardware running Linux with a choice of multicore processors to deliver a wide variety of networking and security protocols and features. By solving critical data plane performance challenges on multicore architectures, 6WIND enables a cost-effective value proposition, enabling the transition to the future with SDN and NFV.

"The networking and telecom industries are undergoing a transformation due to modern advances that promise cost savings and flexibility," said Eric Carmès, CEO and founder, 6WIND. "OpenDaylight has created a neutral space for the industry to collaborate and enable that transformation. 6WIND is excited to be part of this industry change by enabling the required performance for telcos, enterprises and cloud providers to benefit from open networking architectures."

Avaya is a global provider of business collaboration and communications solutions, providing unified communications, contact centers, networking and related services to companies of all sizes around the world. Avaya's open standards-based platform accommodates customers with multi-vendor environments seeking to use their existing investments, supplement their existing solutions with specific collaboration products they need, and rapidly create and deploy applications.

"We believe that OpenDaylight is the right platform on which to deliver the orchestration layer for Fabric Connect, our field-tested SDN configuration engine," said Liam Kiely, vice president, Product Management for Avaya Networking. "We also expect to follow that by using OpenDaylight for vSwitch control at the network edge."

H3C Technologies is a leading global supplier of IP-based products and solutions. With principal operations in Hangzhou, China, H3C employs 5,000 people worldwide. H3C offers a full series of IP products and solutions, including networking, security, management software, wireless, and more. H3C sells its products and solutions through more than 3,900 channel partners in Greater China. H3C leverages HP's global resources to sell H3C products and solutions to the worldwide customers.

"Network architecture is rapidly evolving to become software-defined and open source is a crucial part of that," said Xuejun You, VP, H3C. "The ability to manage networks dynamically and respond to changing needs is what SDN and all about and having an infrastructure based on openness means we can innovate where it counts."

OpenDaylight represents the largest community of developers collaborating to deliver an open, common architecture for network programmability. Because it is open source, OpenDaylight can be a core component within any SDN- and NFV-based architecture, and anyone can use, modify and contribute to the codebase. The community has begun work on OpenDaylight's second open source software release, Helium, leading up to the OpenDaylight Developer Design Forum event aimed at the developer community taking place September 29-30 in Santa Clara.

About the OpenDaylight Project
The OpenDaylight Project is a collaborative open source project that aims to accelerate adoption of software-defined networking (SDN) and create a solid foundation for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) for a more transparent approach that fosters new innovation and reduces risk. Founded by industry leaders and open to all, the OpenDaylight community is developing a common, open SDN framework consisting of code and blueprints. Get involved: www.opendaylight.org.
