ISO and IEC Approve OASIS AMQP Advanced Message Queuing Protocol

The enterprise-level Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP), developed by the OASIS open standards consortium, has now been approved for release as an ISO and IEC International Standard. AMQP 1.0 was balloted through the Joint Technical Committee on Information Technology (JTC1) of the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The approved OASIS AMQP submission has been given the designation, ISO/IEC 19464.

AMQP provides a platform-agnostic method for ensuring information is safely transported between applications, among organizations, within mobile infrastructures, and across the Cloud. AMQP is used in areas as varied as financial front office trading, ocean observation, transportation, smart grid, computer-generated animation, and online gaming. Many operating systems include AMQP implementations, and many application frameworks are AMQP-aware. There are Cloud-hosted offerings of AMQP, and it is embedded in virtualization infrastructure.

"ISO and the IEC both value the reliability and interoperability that are integral to this protocol. We are happy to bring this important industry specification to the global community as an ISO/IEC International Standard,” said Gabriela Ehrlich, Global Head of Marketing and Communications at IEC, and Katie Bird, Head of Communication and Content strategies at ISO.

“ISO /IEC approval of AMQP as an International Standard is an exciting milestone that undoubtedly will fuel continued growth in the AMQP ecosystem,” noted Laurent Liscia, CEO of OASIS. “We appreciate the support this action shows for the OASIS open standards process, and we join ISO and IEC in recognizing the value and long-term viability of AMQP.”

In October 2012, AMQP was ratified as an OASIS Standard and subsequently submitted by OASIS to the ISO/IEC JTC 1, Information Technology body. As ISO/IEC 19464, the standard will continue to be maintained and advanced by the OASIS AMQP Technical Committee, which includes representatives of Axway, Bank of America, Cisco, Credit Suisse, Cryptsoft, Deutsche Börse, JPMorgan Chase, Kaazing, Microsoft, Red Hat, Software AG, US Department of Homeland Security, VMware, and others. New members are welcome.

Support for AMQP ISO/IEC 19464

Microsoft

“With the rapid shift toward cloud-based services and the Internet of Things, there is a strong need for an open, standard messaging protocol for sending and receiving secure reliable messages between devices on the Web. AMQP is well-suited to support a wide variety of messaging applications and communication patterns. It is encouraging to see numerous interoperable implementations of AMQP across the industry, including Microsoft Azure Service Bus which supports AMQP 1.0 for a variety of scenarios. As an international standard, AMQP can now be more easily adopted across the globe.”
-- Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President, Cloud and Enterprise Group, Microsoft

Red Hat

“As a long-term contributor to the development of AMQP, Red Hat is pleased to see AMQP 1.0 released as an International Standard by ISO/IEC JTC1 thereby facilitating adoption across national boundaries. We support AMQP 1.0 in our products and see it being used in a wide range of scenarios from traditional enterprise messaging to cloud-based applications and Internet of Things. We look forward to continue working with the community to promote AMQP-based interoperability and innovation.”
-- Dr. Mark Little, Vice President, Middleware Engineering, Red Hat

Software AG

"AMQP 1.0 represents a huge step forward towards true vendor neutral messaging and Software AG’s Universal Messaging team is very pleased to have participated actively in the AMQP 1.0 standardization cycle from its early working group days, through to OASIS and finally ISO 19464 over the past five years.”
-- Eddie McDaid, Software AG

WebRTC is bringing significant change to the communications landscape that will bridge the worlds of web and telephony, making the Internet the new standard for communications. Cloud9 took the road less traveled and used WebRTC to create a downloadable enterprise-grade communications platform that is changing the communication dynamic in the financial sector. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Leo Papadopoulos, CTO of Cloud9, discussed the importance of WebRTC and how it enables companies to focus o...
Big Data engines are powering a lot of service businesses right now. Data is collected from users from wearable technologies, web behaviors, purchase behavior as well as several arbitrary data points we’d never think of. The demand for faster and bigger engines to crunch and serve up the data to services is growing exponentially. You see a LOT of correlation between “Cloud” and “Big Data” but on Big Data and “Hybrid,” where hybrid hosting is the sanest approach to the Big Data Infrastructure pro...
In his General Session at 16th Cloud Expo, David Shacochis, host of The Hybrid IT Files podcast and Vice President at CenturyLink, investigated three key trends of the “gigabit economy" though the story of a Fortune 500 communications company in transformation. Narrating how multi-modal hybrid IT, service automation, and agile delivery all intersect, he will cover the role of storytelling and empathy in achieving strategic alignment between the enterprise and its information technology.

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust’ from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain. In this power panel at @...
