Sencha Appoints Art Landro as CEO

Sencha, a leader in powering HTML5 development for desktop and mobile applications, today announced that Art Landro has joined the company as its new chief executive officer, effective immediately. Landro has two decades of senior executive experience with leading enterprise technology companies and will drive Sencha’s mission to deliver an ideal platform for designing, developing and deploying applications on any device, platform or browser. Landro is taking over the Sencha helm from Michael Mullany, who will remain an active member of the Sencha board after four years of making the company’s application frameworks and tools the global standard for HTML5 development.

Prior to joining Sencha, Landro was the CEO of Netherlands-based Cordys, where he repositioned the company as a platform-as-a-service (PaaS), cloud-provisioning and cloud BPM solutions provider, which culminated in its acquisition by OpenText in 2013. Before Cordys, Landro was President of MontaVista Software, a division of Cavium Networks, where he drove investment in embedded Linux virtualization for multi-core processors, opened new markets in telecommunications and automotive. During his time, Landro increased revenue by 65 percent. He also was the vice president Asia-Pacific/Japan for Documentum, and following its acquisition by EMC, the vice president of Global Accounts, EMC Software.

“I am very excited about the opportunity in front of Sencha,” said Landro. “I know that IT departments, line-of-business executives and CIOs are struggling to maintain, support and upgrade legacy applications, which is only compounded by the explosion of new mobile devices, platforms and operating systems. Sencha’s industry-leading frameworks and tools, combined with our groundbreaking Sencha Space secure mobile application deployment solution, uniquely position us in the market. We are clearly the ideal technology partner for large enterprises and SMBs that want to design, build, deploy and manage critical business applications from a unified development platform.”

Sencha’s investors include Sequoia Capital, Radar Partners and JAFCO Ventures.

“Art Landro is the ideal person to lead Sencha in its next stage of rapid growth,” said Jim Goetz, Sequoia Capital. “Sencha is helping to address the mobile disruption in the enterprise and they will continue to be a leader in cross-platform, multi-device application development.”

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
