In a world of intensifying global competition and accelerating change, recipients of the ML Awards have distinguished themselves by embracing breakthrough innovation and enabling their companies to anticipate and respond to customers with unmatched agility.

The award winning SmartDispenser® was developed to address global manufacturers’ needs for process control applied to their fluid dispensing applications and web based devices able to network with developing MES systems. The market had been dominated by antiquated machines that use compressed air to operate. Often customers had to settle and live with the variation of air pressure resulting in costly, out of control dispensing processes.

The SmartDispenser’s design offers a unique business solution. The patented process control immediately eliminates problems significantly increasing profits to the bottom line. The stability of the AirFree® Linear Drive System eliminates maintenance and daily adjustments. Replacing air pressure with electricity drastically reduces energy costs. The combination provides a factory upgrade with an outstanding return on investment with a low total cost of ownership.

“We’re honored to receive this recognition for our focus on delivering innovative, best in class products,” said Fishman President Scott Beebe. “The SmartDispenser® is a prime example of equipment that is part of the ongoing Industrial Revolution; it is disruptive technology that is upsetting the status quo of installed fluid dispensers operated by compressed air.” Scott goes on to say, “The industrial internet is under development, MES systems are rapidly replacing old MRP systems, the age of web based manufacturing with network communication, control and real time data is upon us. Our web based SmartDispenser® technology has the infrastructure to instantly plug into and communicate with an MES host giving our customers the ability to maximize their investment in these factory upgrades. Instant customization of our base product through manufacturing Apps activate these communication protocols on an individual basis allowing the customer to decide method and form of how they communicate with their MES. The result is maximum reduction of human error, unprecedented reporting, lower deployment costs, lower total cost of ownership with significant increased profits.

“Air compressors are the most expensive line item in a manufacturing facility. They are also a major contributor to greenhouse gasses. A side benefit of AirFree® technology is the elimination of the air compressor from manufacturing thus lowering the facility’s carbon footprint.”

Additionally, tablets, mobile devices and computer operating systems are being designed with incredible similarity thanks to introduction and success of Apple’s iPhone. Years ago operating systems such as Linux, Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows had vastly different user interfaces, functioning independent of mobile counterparts. All current operating systems such as Android, Bada, iOS, Windows 8 are developed to mirror the iPhone. The SmartDispenser® design follows suit with a GUI interface similar to the iPhone. This eases training and product acceptance as new operators are instantly comfortable with the human-to-machine interface.

The installed base of SmartDispenser® systems has grown significantly in the past year and projections for 2014 reflect a substantial increase over 2013.

The SmartDispenser® is a forward-thinking design meeting the expectations and demands of assembly fluid bonding in the 21st Century manufacturing facility. The dramatic improvement driven by Fishman Corporation through the SmartDispenser® makes it the worthy recipient of the 2014 ML Award for Product Leadership.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
