DUSSELDORF, GERMANY -- (Marketwired) -- 07/01/14 -- The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organisation dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux and collaborative development, today announced the keynote speakers for LinuxCon + CloudOpen + Embedded Linux Conference Europe, taking place 13-15 October at the Congress Centre Düsseldorf.
LinuxCon Europe is the place to learn from the best and the brightest, delivering content from the leading maintainers, developers and project leads in the Linux community. There's simply no other event in Europe where developers, sys admins, architects and all types and levels of technical talent gather together under one roof for education, collaboration and problem-solving to further knowledge of Linux and open source collaboration in general. LinuxCon will feature over 100 sessions with innovative content on the latest kernel updates, storage technologies and interfaces, security, Internet of Things and talks related to open source collaboration and best practices.
CloudOpen Europe features technical content that addresses open cloud platforms and devops tools. It is the only venue where various open cloud technologies come together under one roof to advance Apache Stratos, AWS, Chef, CloudStack, Docker, Gluster, Hadoop, Juju, KVM, Linux, MariaDB, MySQL, OpenDaylight, OpenStack, oVirt, Puppet, SaltStack, the Xen Project and more.
This year Embedded Linux Conference (ELC) Europe is co-located with LinuxCon + CloudOpen. This premier, vendor-neutral technical conference is for companies and developers using Linux in embedded products. Now in its 8th year, ELC Europe has the largest collection of sessions dedicated exclusively to embedded Linux and embedded Linux developers.
LinuxCon + CloudOpen + ELC Europe will also be co-located with a variety of other technical events to increase opportunities for learning and collaboration. These events include the KVM Forum, an event focused on the open source hypervisor that provides an ideal platform for datacenter virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructure, and cloud computing. Other co-located events include the Linux Tracing Summit, which focuses on the tracing area, gathering people involved in development and end-users of tracing tools as well as trace analysis tools, and the Linux Plumbers Conference, a conference for deep technical problem solving for those developers working on the Linux kernel subsystems.
The speakers giving keynote addresses at this year's LinuxCon + CloudOpen + ELC Europe showcase the advances of Linux and open cloud but also how the methods and principles of Linux and open source are spreading to other aspects of society, including retail and healthcare.
Confirmed keynote speakers include:
- Jono Bacon, Senior Director of Community at XPRIZE, will provide insight into how to get the most out of working in a community environment with 'Building Exponential Communities'
- Paul Biondich, Founder and President of OpenMRS, will discuss how open source communities are helping to improve the health of the poor around the world
- Joanna Rutkowska, Founder and CEO of Invisible Things Lab, will cover Qube OS and how it is a practical security approach for client systems
- Chris Schlaeger, Managing Director at Amazon Development Center, will present a keynote covering the building blocks of Amazon Web Services
- Frank Karlitschek, founder of the ownCloud project, will talk about giving groups of private clouds public cloud capabilities -- while still maintaining their integrity, security and privacy -- and what this could mean to the future of the cloud. ownCloud CEO Markus Rex follows with a panel discussions with representatives from SurfNet, NRW and others about this next revolution
- Additionally, the always highly anticipated Linux Kernel Panel keynote will feature Linux creator and Linux Foundation Fellow Linus Torvalds along with other leading kernel developers and maintainers who will provide insights into the state of the Linux kernel as well as ongoing and future work
These speakers showcase how leaders in diverse industries are using the power of the community to innovate and advance technology for all. CloudOpen attendees will be presented with projects that fit this narrative, from Docker to Mesos to OpenStack.
"As the use of open source practices spreads rapidly across industries, it is important for Linux and other professionals with experience implementing these practices to encourage this growth collaboratively," said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. "The keynote speakers for this year's LinuxCon + CloudOpen + ELC Europe are working on projects that demonstrate how the principles and methodologies inherent in the Linux community -- especially collaboration and openness -- are spreading into new areas."
LinuxCon + CloudOpen + ELC Europe will additionally feature a community management training class offered by keynote speaker Jono Bacon, who also wrote the book 'The Art of Community'. Bacon will discuss how to build and grow a community, including building collaborative workflows, defining a governance structure, planning, marketing, and evaluating effectiveness.

A critical component of any IoT project is the back-end systems that capture data from remote IoT devices and structure it in a way to answer useful questions. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle large data sets, but they are not well suited to many IoT-scale products and the need for real-time insights. At Fuze, we have developed a backend platform as part of our mobility-oriented cloud service that uses Big Data-based approache...
