Ayla Networks IoT Platform Chosen by LockState to Build Internet-Enabled Secure Access Systems

Ayla's Agile IoT(TM) Platform Dramatically Cuts Costs and Time-to-Market With End to End, Multi-Layer Security Architecture

SUNNYVALE, CA and SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- (Marketwired) -- 07/09/14 -- Ayla Networks, a pioneer in Agile platforms for the Internet of Things (IoT), will provide cloud services and other technologies to enable LockState to bring intelligent door locks and other security systems to market to meet the rapidly growing demand for Internet-connected products.

LockState will use Ayla's technology to power a commercial version of their RemoteLock, a Wi-Fi enabled Internet door lock. With RemoteLock, property owners can issue permanent or temporary passcodes to service personnel, family members or guests without worrying about lock boxes, hiding keys or illegal copying. A security camera that is part of the RemoteLock platform can also monitor and capture activity around the door. LockState looked at several IoT partners and contemplated building its own cloud, but chose to collaborate with Ayla because Ayla's solution was the only one that met its requirements for security, cost and time-to-market.

"We easily saved $500,000 and nine months of development time by working with Ayla and we anticipate saving even more by leveraging Ayla's cloud services to manage our products as RemoteLock gets deployed," said Nolan Mondrow, CEO and Founder of LockState. "But more importantly, an Internet-enabled lock has to still work like a lock. It has to be safe, reliable and never stop working. Ayla's security technology and services provide the stringent performance levels required by our company and our customers."

RemoteLock links directly to phones and other devices via an integrated Wi-Fi module: additional gateways are not required. RemoteLock can operate a year on a single battery charge. LockState will release a commercial version of its RemoteLock this fall and primarily market it to commercial customers and applications like short-term rentals, office buildings and storage facilities where dynamic access control and remote monitoring are a must. Additional consumer locks are in development.

IoT Agility
Ayla's mission is to provide the world with the first truly agile platform for the Internet of Things. Ayla achieves its high degree of flexibility through a seamless fabric of interconnected elements, including embedded agents for devices, cloud-based back-end infrastructure and services, and intelligent application libraries.

Ayla, for instance, has collaborated with leading semiconductor and module companies such as Broadcom, STMicroelectronics, USI, NXP Semiconductor and Murata Americas to develop components complete with software compatible with Ayla's cloud that can be purchased in volume through distribution. Ayla has also designed its cloud infrastructure to accommodate a large number of diverse devices simultaneously.

By adopting Ayla's Agile IoT™ platform and technology, Fortune 500 companies to Kickstarter projects can quickly design and develop connected products and move into volume production. Ayla's platform is compatible with the widest possible variety of communication standards and OSes, including leading radio standards such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and operating systems such as Linux, Android, iOS. Enterprise-class security is assured through multi-layer authentication, encryption, and policy control managed through Ayla's cloud services and advanced operational portals.

Built-in data analytics enable real-time learning and a virtual device management system allows manufacturers to quickly react to this learning and modify their products -- even after they are deployed in the field. Enterprise-class features include multi-tiered role based access control, remote firmware update management and customer service visibility tools.

The company is collaborating with SINA, the world's largest Chinese language portal, and a number of established U.S. manufacturers on Internet-enabled products. Ayla has also announced plans to build an IoT cloud to serve customers in China.

"LockState has a great vision for connected door locks: provide a highly reliable, simple to use lock that brings sophisticated, high-end commercial features at an affordable price. This system provides alerts and makes it far easier to manage entry and access," said Dave Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Ayla Networks. "By developing and managing an infrastructure for connected devices, Ayla is able to free up companies like LockState to concentrate on creating great new products."

The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...
