SAINTwriter allows even the suits to grok security

World Wide Digital Security has released SAINTwriter 1.0.2, a report generator for its Security Administrator's Integrated Network Tool (SAINT). The companion tool makes output from the security tool easier to understand for all levels of expertise, from technical staff to executive management. SAINTwriter provides graphing and tabling tools, more than 50 configuration options to design your report, and six predefined report types to get you started. It runs on Linux and all flavors of Unix. It is priced by the number of hosts on your network starting at $150 for up to 25 hosts.

Transvirtual Technologies releases PocketLinux 1.0

Transvirtual Technologies has finally released its PocketLinux application environment for Linux-based devices. It is designed for resource-constrained devices such as personal digital assistants, smart phones, and other mobile applications. Developers can now write mobile applications using a framework that will run on any platform running PocketLinux. The software includes the Kaffe Java virtual machine, an XML engine, and a frame buffer graphics library. With version 1.0, PocketLinux now supports Compaq iPaq; the Casio Cassiopeia E-105, E-110, and E-115; the NTT DoCoMo Sigmarion; the IBM Workpad Z- 50; and the Vadem Clio. More platforms will be announced in the future. The package is downloadable for free from Transvirtual's Website.

Manage Linux systems with Aduva Director

Palo Alto-based Aduva introduced its Aduva Director system administration tool for multiple networked hosts, designed specifically for multisystem Linux environments. The package includes the Aduva Knowledge Base with details on conflict and dependency information for hardware device drivers, software applications, and kernel module components. The software maintains an up-to-date inventory and profile of all hardware and software information per managed host. Pricing is not yet available.

Merlin's Arcana brings Linux to small business

Merlin Software Technologies introduced its Arcana family of Linux appliances for small businesses, including an easy-to-install networking solution with print, file, Web, email, and fax server software; a domain controller; backup software; and a 4- or 8-port hub with management software. Arcana supports Linux, Unix, Macintosh, and Windows environments as clients. Pricing for the appliance server starts at $1,000.

Metro Link ships Motif toolkit for IA-64

Metro Link is shipping Metro Motif Complete! for Intel's Itanium processor. In one of the first announcements of products for the upcoming 64-bit Intel platform for PCs, the package provides a toolkit for creating Motif-based graphical user environments for native Itanium-based applications. It supports the three most popular versions of the Motif user environment (1.2.4, 2.0.1, and 2.1.30), for multiple development environments. It runs on Linux IA-64 and soon AIX 5L (Project Monterey). Pricing is set at $1,200 per development seat and $149 per runtime.

Century Software releases development toolkit for embedded Linux

Century Software Embedded Technologies released version 1.1 of its operating environment and development toolkit for embedded Linux. The toolkit allows embedded developers to create environments that support a wireless network environment on processor platforms such as the Intel StrongARM, NEC MIPS Harrier, and National Semiconductor x86 Geode. It includes a graphical network configuration utility for PPP, modems, Ethernet, and wireless TCP/IP connections; a POP3 e-mail and ViewML browser; a Personal Information Manager suite with address book, scheduler, calendar, todo list, notes, clock, and calculator applications; and MP3 audio and MPEG 1 video players. Pricing is not available at this time.

Applied Data Systems introduces single-board computer for dual monitors

Applied Data Systems introduced its Tandem, a single-board computer with support for dual monitors, available with embedded Linux. The hardware system runs on the Intel StrongARM processor, and has two MediaQ MQ200 graphics controllers with 2 MB frame buffers to drive up to two 24-bit XGA graphics displays. The system also includes a USB Bus Master with a four port hub, 10BaseT, a temperature probe, and the ADSmart I/O system for 32 user-selectable digital I/O attachments and 12 analog inputs. Pricing is available directly from the vendor.
