'Super-Linux' Cluster Declared Third-Fastest Computer On Earth

(July 7, 2003) - A supercomputer capable of 7.6 teraflops – that’s 7.6 trillion calculations per second – has just been rated as the third fastest computer in the world: in fact it’s a Linux cluster with 2,304 2.4 GHz Dual Intel Xeon processors – making it also the fastest computer on earth with “Intel inside.”

The Linux Networx Evolocity system, known as just MCR, is so fast that just 18 months ago such a performance would have earned it the absolute No. 1 slot as the fastest supercomputer on earth.

Built in 2002, the MCR system is located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and has 4.6 terabytes of aggregate memory across over 1,116 nodes, with 115 terabytes of storage. It’s connected using the Quadrics interconnect and LLNL uses the Linux Networx ICE Box cluster appliance for system management.

LLNL is using the cluster to conduct experiments in global climate modeling, material properties, earthquakes and other large-scale, high-performance simulations of physical phenomena.

The no. 3 ranking was announced this week in the twice-yearly rankings performed by the TOP500 project, started in 1993 to provide a reliable basis for tracking and detecting trends in high-performance computing.
