Lindows Out to Drain One of Microsoft's Beer Kegs

Seeking to suck up whatever Microsoft resources it can, Lindows.com is going to try to insure that the software goliath pays out all of the $1.1 billion that it's agreed to pay to settle those California class actions claiming Microsoft overcharged for Windows. The upstart has dreamed up a Web service styled www.MsfreePC.com where it says consumers can process their claims simply and easily and get an "instant settlement" of up to $100 in "four minutes." It says no receipts are required. Manually it says the refund process could take six months. Naturally Lindows is hoping that it gets a cut and it'll get a nice database out of the exercise so it doesn't mind raffling off a Lindows PC and some Lindows software to the first users of the Web site. Lindows CEO Michael Robertson reminds people that "If consumers do not apply for their settlements during this limited time period, Microsoft will not be required to pay the full $1.1 billion settlement."
