Embracing DevOps in 2016 | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Microservices

Talk in the IT industry has revolved around Speed, Cost and Quality and doesn't vary for DevOps outcomes either

While I was on the fairway during my golf round, I initiated a discussion with my corporate buddies on DevOps and it all started this way:

Is the old wine in the new bottle?

Not surprisingly, for decades, the IT industry talk has revolved around Speed, Cost and Quality and does not vary for DevOps outcomes either - Faster, Agile and Better; FAB Way!. In my perspective and in addition to the above, Collaboration, Behavioral aspects, process maturity levels, building infrastructure, CX are some more components which needs detailed attention too.

2015 - A year with DevOps-buzz which created a lot of interest and towards the year end it went ‘beyond buzz'.  Many System Integrators (SIs) scheduled day long events, organized evangelization with their Org and to their customers. Some SIs was cautious on their moves and some took big steps. Few bundled DevOps as a part of their transformation deals into DevOps win!

In mid-2015, I had several interactions with some top notch customers who had adapted to the agile methodology and most of them were looking for further optimization. Well, there must be ways to do it and adopting Devops is the ONE that can take it to the next level.

DevOps is now spoken by customers globally and many have their own definition to it; like implementing point-solutions on Release Automation or Service/Network Virtualization or People aspects or E2E Automation! More are focused by few instances and YES, they are enablers marching towards E2E DevOps.

Key take away and approach by some of the DevOps implementers are:

Top Down - According to my view, this approach really works where the CxOs / Leadership team have clarity in terms of their organizations /various Business Unit (BU) maturity levels. Study says that few of the IT Banks are already forming DevOps Units within their Orgs and moving towards end-to-end DevOps implementation.

Bottom Up - This approach is workable and is a good starting point. Initiating in a small way through Service Virtualization, Release Automation, E2E Automation, Integration of various tools, etc.,

There is another thought that clogs in many of the customers. Will DevOps take away the jobs? The same thought went through when the Industrial Automation happened/ning in manufacturing industry or Automation in IT industry!! It's all about how we embrace a new technology.

When we embrace new technologies or new ways of doing it, I am sure we will be able to move to the next level and expand our horizons. Combining DevOps tool-chain with the ongoing trends in the market such as Cloud, Mobility, IoT, Analytics and so on will be key to success of DevOps implementation.

Lastly, how do you want to embrace DevOps in your Organization? With a Top-down or Bottom-up approach or bundle into Digital Transformation or any different strategy?

I am sure 2016 will be an exciting year to watch and showcase savings through DevOps!!

More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...
