2.6 Kernel Out for Enterprise Testing

2.6 Kernel Out for Enterprise Testing

The long-promised 2.6 kernel was released for enterprise testing Monday. The Open Source Develop Lab (OSDL), where Linux creator Linus Torvalds and 2.6 kernel maintainer Andrew Morton now work because OSDL wants to be the center of the Linux universe, made the announcement.

The OS, known as test9, can be found at either www.kernel.org or ftp.kernel.org.

OSDL says the preview should be tested, validated and enhanced - in other words pounded on - in preparation for the next production kernel release, which probably can't happen before next year.

The first test release was in July and established stable APIs like Posix and thread interfaces.

The OSDL has done performance and regression tests on the latest thing in both in its lab in Oregon and in Japan. The results can be found at www.osdl.org/projects/26lnxstbiztn/results/. The New kernel is supposed to be more versatile than its predecessors and enlarge the places where Linux can replace legacy apps.

It's supposed to scale to 32 production processors and support up to 8GB of memory on an IA-32 machine. It's got a new native Posix thread library for faster threading and an enhanced driver layer to handle features such as logical volume management and improved disk performance, support for more embedded devices and improved desktop features such hot-plug devices and a new Linux sound architecture.
