Does Anyone Other Than Linux People Visit Linux Sites?

A LinuxWorld Readers asks...and "maddog" responds

Wanted: a LinuxWorld reader with superb inside connections to BusinessWeek or The New York Times or Fortune. . .

It is LinuxWorld reader James Smith who raises the issue. Referring to the pair of open letters to SCO's supremo Darl McBride released last week, one by Red Hat co-founder Bob Young and the other by Linux International's Jon "maddog" Hall, he writes:

I agree with everything in these two letters. They both bring up some good points that show what a loser Darl is. However, I get the distinct feeling that they're both preaching to the choir. Darl's open letters have received press attention outside Linux sites, but what about these letters? And does anyone visit Linux sites other than Linux people? If anyone has anything to prove me wrong, please post it. I would love to be proven wrong. Since this case isn't really about what actually happens in court and is more about what happens in the press. . .

At LinuxWorld, we try to listen to readers and to act on their suggestions. So let us ask, is there anyone who can help refute Smith's assertion? Certainly these letters were brought to the attention for example of the Slashdot community, but is anyone aware of the Young / Hall letters receiving an airing elsewhere? If so, please post the link via the Feedback mechanism below and let's see whether we can't do something about the insularity that Smith claims is rife.

I saw McBride's letter in Maureen O'Gara's LinuxGram newsletter, which is read by both Linux people and people considering Linux. If I had seen it in the Wall Street Journal, I probably would have written to them, as I have in the past.

I have known Maureen for over fifteen years. I know that she is a fair and just reporter of news, and would print a well-worded reply, which other papers that I have submitted articles to have not necessarily done. She knows that I would not purposely lead her astray, and that I am a straight-shooter. She printed my letter, and Bob's. My letter got picked up by Slashdot, then pointed to by Linuxworld. Perhaps some other more "mainstream" news agency will pick
it up, but I will not have been disappointed by where it has
gone already.

I have submitted my share of news articles to mainstream
press before, and cooperated with another couple of
hundred mainstream articles about Linux over the past ten
years, but quite frankly the best "news" that I can generate
is to more fully educate the average Linux lover with the
proper information so they can go and talk with their boss,
or their educator or their software supplier about why this
SCO fiasco is just that, a fiasco. Just reading an
article in the WSJ is not going to influence someone as
much as having that real, live human being in front of
them who can calmly and clearly explain things.
