The 2016 State of DevOps survey shows the smartest DevOps organizations are faster than ever, while the laggards are falling way behind. The reality of business today is that it’s increasingly built by software developers, and those developers move faster. And faster. And faster. This is evidenced by one succinct chart in the report, and should be a huge motivator for every company that still thinks DevOps is a fad.

2The Automation of Design

By @kaibrunner | Published on @TechCrunch

Murphy’s Law decrees: “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” For any of us whose livelihood depends on our labor, things going wrong could mean: “Anything that can be automated, will be automated.” Our labor or skill in exchange for pay has undoubtedly caused us to seek security in the notion that we’ll be forever needed. And yet time has shown that our ingenuity for efficiency orchestrates our removal from all forms of repetitive tasks. Energy and mechanization brought us from our fields into cities near factories, and in the past decades into offices behind our monitors. Engineers are even rendering themselves obsolete by automating the very thing they are critical for: thinking and making things.

If you’re wondering what IT skill sets to acquire, security and DevOps are doing well in the job market. Pay for cloud skills, however, is eroding. Research firm Foote Partners’ latest quarterly IT Skills and Certifications Pay Index determined that the market value for 404 of the 450 IT certifications it tracks had increased for 12 consecutive quarters. Market values rose for noncertified IT skills for the fifth consecutive quarter.

As anyone who has ever been set up on blind dates by friends can attest, finding the right match in today’s world is a tricky feat. There’s a lot of evidence suggesting that the frantic pace of life makes such matchmaking more difficult than ever. That said, when the right set of complimentary traits exist and there’s a willingness to find common ground, things can work out. Spike Jonzian-notions of artificial intelligence aside, certain technological partnerships are increasingly being perceived as “a perfect marriage” within the context of DevOps automation.

DevOps couldn’t be hotter. To cope with modern customer demands, applications need to be developed, tested and put into production swiftly. Industry experts have been preaching about DevOps for faster, more reliable software development. Gartner expects this development approach will go mainstream by the end of 2016. But while DevOps can provide many improvements throughout all stages of the development lifecycle, it is imperative to avoid some of the common pitfalls. A fully-firing database is core to any DevOps strategy, because slow data equates to slow results, something the methodology is trying to eradicate.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
