eBay: "Skype Has Not Performed As Well As We Hoped"

Founder Niklas Zennstrom steps down as chief executive of Skype, becomes non-executive chairman

'Skype has not performed as well as we would have hoped,' said an eBay spokesman yesterday as the company announced drastically reduced bonuses would be paid to Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom and others due to Skype's poor financial performance since eBay acquired it two years ago for $2.6BN. 'But we still believe Skype to be an extremely valuable asset.'

Skype's founder, Niklas Zennstrom (pictured), has resigned as CEO of Skype and will instead become non-executive chairman. A permanent successor has not yet been hired, but eBay's chief strategy officer, Michael van Swaaij, will serve as Skype's acting CEO until a replacement is named.
