"Red Hat Will Take Linux Beyond the Server," Says Szulik

Speaking last week at the Reuters Technology, Media and Telecommunications Summit in New York, Red Hat chief executive Matthew Szulik emphasized that Red Hat will be taking Linux beyond the server and onto PC desktops as well as into devices.

This comes in the wake of the recent announcement by Red Hat that it would start working with device software maker Wind River Systems Inc. in an effort to push Linux beyond personal computers into a range of industrial and commercial devices such as cell phones and television set-top boxes.

Customers for such devices may well lie outside the US. Countries such as India and China will "clearly outpace consumption [of Linux] in the U.S. in the next five to 10 years," Szulik noted.
