"The evidence from Gartner, Meta and other research organizations indicates that conventional physical disaster recovery (DR) plans are largely fiction," according to Steve Kaplan and Gary Lamb, both principals in AccessFlow. "The true intent behind them is to secure an auditor check off rather than to provide a workable design for quick IT recovery from a disaster," say Kaplan and Lamb, who will jointly be giving a session on the subject at Virtualization Conference & Expo 2007 next month in San Francisco.
"The problem is that physical DR solutions are too limited, complex and expensive to be practical for most organizations," they continue. "Whereas virtualization on the other hand provides both the platform and tools required for creating a cost-effective disaster recovery solution that actually works."
Their session is called "Providing Ultimate DR Through Virtualization." AccessFlow is a virtualization consultancy recently designated by VMware as the
VMware Rising Star of the Americas.
Steve Kaplan has written multiple books and scores of
articles on disaster recovery and other IT topics. He has spoken at well-known
IT venues across the globe including two VMworlds, Citrix iForum Australia,
Continuity Insights Conference in New Orleans, and he delivered the keynote at
ThinPower 2006 in Norway. While Gary Lamb has over 24 years of IT experience dating back to MVP systems
programming, and including running a security consulting practice for ISS. He has helped implement DR solutions for multiple Fortune 1000 clients including
designing the branch ATM backup network for one of the nation’s largest banks, and is currently helping design a virtual DR grid for the State of Nevada.
