Linux in Munich - "LiMux" - May Come Soon After All

  • Munich's Linux Plans - "LiMux" Put on Hold

The Munich city administration is "standing by Linux" after all.

According to reports today, Munich's Mayor Christian Ude has stated that his administration's IT experts had recently presented "strategic outlines" of the Linux project to officials from Augsburg and Nuernberg and noted that there was "interest in Munich's open source solution" from these German cities as well as from Vienna.

As reported last week, tenders were indeed put on ice pending investigation of the implications of a European Union directive on "computer-implemented inventions" - such as an OS like Linux.

Fears that switching to Linux could infringe up to 50 patents were based on a study carried out by the Foundation for Free Information Infrastructure. But it seems now that the situation may resolve itself and the good burghers of Munich may see their city switch to "LiMux" after all.
