    "What got me excited this time," wrote James Gosling last night in his blog heralding the release last week of NetBeans 4.0, "isn't one of the new features (like Ant-based projects, JDK 5.0 support, J2ME support, refactoring or all the rest), it's one of the features that's been there for a while, I had just never tried it out."

    He was referring to the servlet development support in Netbeans.

    In his daily life, Gosling explains, he mostly writes client side code. "It's been a couple of years since I've needed to write a servlet."

    "Writing servlets is easy, but dealing with deployment can be rough. So I decided to try the servlet development support in NetBeans. Piece of cake! No writing deployment descriptors, no fighting with installing and configuring a server. Just run the wizard, type in the body of the servlet, and click run. Direct to having fun with the ImageIO libraries..."

    Praise from the co-creator of Java is praise indeed. The Netbeans beta1 is here.

    A couple other posters have the right attitude. Gosling works for Sun. This together with his lack of knowledge/interest/commentary of other IDE's make him less of an expert than most developers, who are (at minimum) trying to find a good IDE for themselves and possibly their peers and company.

    Of course Gosling thinks NetBeans rocks... HE WORKS FOR SUN!

    And, how scary is it that he hasn't written a servlet in "years" -- this is the father of Java?

    I've always used NetBeans whenever I've had any Java work to do. Mainly because it was the first free IDE I found that I liked the look of. It takes a bit of working out but it has always worked for me. However, it sometimes throws strange errors, is slow to load and has that horrible built-with-Java look to it. That's why I have recently switched to Eclipse. It looks a lot cleaner, loads faster and has yet to give me any grief.

    Quoting Gosling as saying "Netbeans 4.0 Rocks" is like getting a quote from Bill Gates saying "Windows XP is the best!". Please post an independent assesment of the product.
