VeriWave Introduces "Eco-System" Testing for Wireless Client Devices

New WaveClient(TM) Targets Testing of Medical Devices, Industrial Controllers, Handsets

PORTLAND, OR -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 05/20/08 -- VeriWave is extending its mobile performance testing solutions to include wireless client devices used in healthcare, retail, government, communications and industrial applications. The leading provider of benchmarking technology to WLAN equipment vendors is extending its solutions to providers of wireless-enabled patient monitoring systems, VoIP handsets, industrial controllers and point-of-sale devices. Bringing "real world" scenarios into the test lab, VeriWave's new WaveClient test suite is the first to bridge the gap between limited lab tests and potentially disruptive testing in actual user networks.

WaveClient allows wireless device manufacturers to create the actual network eco-system surrounding the device -- including specific mixes of equipment, applications and traffic conditions -- in the lab -- and measure how devices will coexist, how well a system will scale, and how consistently traffic will be prioritized.

According to In-stat, shipments of WiFi chipsets are expected to hit 430 million by 2009, with the WiFi Alliance projections estimating more than 100 million used in devices other than Access Points and PCs.

"WiFi is expanding from its traditional use in laptops to mission critical applications, such as patient monitors, disaster recovery, asset tracking, and retail transaction processing," says Eran Karoly, vice president of Marketing at VeriWave. "In the past, these devices were being tested as stand-alone units in ideal conditions. However, it is essential to test them in the same demanding environment in which they will eventually operate, as is the case in a hospital for example."

In a recent VeriWave webinar, guest host GE Healthcare cited the most important issues in wireless patient monitoring and VeriWave addressed the challenges facing developers of mission-critical wireless client devices -- reliability, the ability to stay "always-on," generate alarms when necessary while eliminating false-alarms, and to maintain connectivity with the network while mobile.

WaveClient responds to one of the major obstacles facing wireless-enabled device testing -- the need to verify their behavior in their operational environment. It utilizes the air-rate traffic generation capabilities of VeriWave's WaveBlades to create an entire deployment specific environment consisting of laptops, handsets, scanners, RFID tags and video cameras. The performance of the wireless-enabled device being tested is then measured in a variety of network conditions, all precisely controlled by the user.

"Up until now, testers have had two choices," says Karoly. "They could either cobble together a few devices in the lab and test with limited scalability, or they could risk putting a device into an actual live network which can not only be disruptive but it makes it very difficult to isolate causes and effects. In one scenario, they don't get a complete picture of how the new device will impact the live network; in the other they don't get a clear picture of how to optimize the network to maximize the performance of the device."
