Microsoft and Novell Announce Joint Virtualization Solution

Novell's Now a Guest at the Hyper-V Table

The industry's resident odd couple, Microsoft and Novell, announced a joint virtualization solution for customers running mixed-source environments Thursday, promoting it as "the first complete, fully supported and optimized virtualization solution to span Windows and Linux environments."

It results of course from their infamous November 2006 pact in which Novell was supposed to have sold its soul for protection from Microsoft's patent threats. Virtualization was one area of user-friendly interoperability cited by the pact.

The solution consists of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server running as a guest operating system on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, and they say it's fully supported by both companies' channel partners, including Dell, which will validate the widgetry on its server blades and rack-mounted systems at the Microsoft-Novell joint Interoperability Lab in Massachusetts.

It's reportedly the first mojo to include technology both Microsoft and Novell developed like virtual machine adapters to optimize SLES as an "enlightened" guest operating system on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and is supposed to represent more than 18 months of technical collaboration.
