So Looking Forward to Movable Type & More on iSCSI and FC

I just had an exchange with some folks on the rupturedmonkey blog regarding the relevance of iSCSI for enterprise datacenter SANs.  All this happened while I was traveling meeting customers and such, and dealing with spotty Internet access and lots of things to do in a compressed amount of time.

Anyway, I had a problem with a post I made last weekend (it disappeared) which I thought had been recovered and reposted, however when I looked today I saw that it had not been completely recovered but had been truncated after the first paragraph.  It was the one below titled, 'Just Don't Believe That FCB FUD'.  I'm posting the entire contents again here - just for the record.

There are FCBs (Fibre Channel Bigots) out there who want customers to believe iSCSI storage networks are only fit for small businesses and departments, supporting basic file services.  A customer told me that’s how one of our competitors that sells both Fibre Channel and iSCSI described it to them. They might have their reasons for positioning their own iSCSI products that way, but I wish they wouldn't try to disparage a perfectly good industry standard.

Yesterday I met a customer using EqualLogic iSCSI SAN storage behind a 250 node Linux cluster running their bread and butter engineering/analytics application.  Definitely not a mom and pop shop - and they are using SATA drives, software initiators and a Gb Ethernet SAN. Their EqualLogic storage is configured a number of ways; including 4-member storage groups (think grids) , 2 member groups and single systems.  FWIW, as their needs change I anticipate they will want to start using EqualLogic 3000 series systems with SAS drives.  There is a lot of performance headroom with those systems.

Storage purchases are too important to be fudded by vendors. Do a real apples to apples comparison and you may find what EqualLogic customers have. This iSCSI stuff can work just as well and just as reliably as FC for a much lower TCO.

We've had a plan in place to change blogging software for some time and it should happen soon.  Hopefully this problem of missing, truncated posts and comments will come to an end.  Its been aggravating.  Anyway, I'm sure changing blogging software won't keep irony from entering my life, but I am looking forward to some improvements.

AI and machine learning disruption for Enterprises started happening in the areas such as IT operations management (ITOPs) and Cloud management and SaaS apps. In 2019 CIOs will see disruptive solutions for Cloud & Devops, AI/ML driven IT Ops and Cloud Ops. Customers want AI-driven multi-cloud operations for monitoring, detection, prevention of disruptions. Disruptions cause revenue loss, unhappy users, impacts brand reputation etc.

Today's workforce is trading their cubicles and corporate desktops in favor of an any-location, any-device work style. And as digital natives make up more and more of the modern workforce, the appetite for user-friendly, cloud-based services grows. The center of work is shifting to the user and to the cloud. But managing a proliferation of SaaS, web, and mobile apps running on any number of clouds and devices is unwieldy and increases security risks. Steve Wilson, Citrix Vice President of Cloud,...
When Enterprises started adopting Hadoop-based Big Data environments over the last ten years, they were mainly on-premise deployments. Organizations would spin up and manage large Hadoop clusters, where they would funnel exabytes or petabytes of unstructured data. However, over the last few years the economics of maintaining this enormous infrastructure compared with the elastic scalability of viable cloud options has changed this equation. The growth of cloud storage, cloud-managed big data e...
Artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural networks. We're in the midst of a wave of excitement around AI such as hasn't been seen for a few decades. But those previous periods of inflated expectations led to troughs of disappointment. This time is (mostly) different. Applications of AI such as predictive analytics are already decreasing costs and improving reliability of industrial machinery. Pattern recognition can equal or exceed the ability of human experts in some domains. It's devel...
