Fedora Core 5 New Features
Streamlining Fedora

Digg This!

For GUI SELinux tools you have apol, the Security Policy Analysis Tool, sediffx for policy differences, and seaudit for examining the audit logs. All are listed in the Administration menu and are part the setools package (not installed by default). Sepcut and seuser have been dropped from setools.

System and Server Changes
Fedora Core 5 now uses Apache 2.2 with new and improved modules.

PCMCIA support is now managed by udev and Hal using pcmciautils. You no longer use the cardmgr/pcmcia service. A PCMCIA device is now considered a hot-plugged device managed by HAL and udev directly. pccardctl replaces cardctl for managing your cards. See www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/pcmcia/pcmcia.html for more details.

The gcc 4.1 compiler is included with new security and performance enhancements.

The administration tools system-config-packages, system-config-mouse, and system-config-logviewer have all been dropped. For mouse and log viewing you now use Gnome tools.

HAL directly mounts media (no fstab edits).

Audit logging tool is now turned on by default. SE Linux AVC messages are saved at /var/log/audit/audit.log. If audit is turned off, /var/log/messages is used.

A new version of dovecot has several configuration changes.

The kernel includes support for GFS (Global File System), which in turn includes dependencies for user-level GFS management. This means that to remove a GFS-enabled kernel you should use YUM instead of rpm -e so that any dependencies are managed appropriately.

Fedora now uses modular X.org, which allows for easier updates. The X Windows System is now installed directly to /usr instead of its own directory, /usr/X11R6. For developers, Imake has been officially deprecated. You now use GNU autotools to build systems and pkgconfig for configuration. Software compiled using X Windows System libraries should now reference their pkgconfig files.

Conclusion
With Fedora Core 5, users now have a much more streamlined system, from software management to basic GUI responsiveness. Both Package Manager and PUP seamlessly integrate with online Fedora repositories, providing easy access to a massive amount of software. Supporting application make software run easier like Mono for .NET, which now enables a whole range of easy-to-use software like Beagle and F-spot. Check the Fedora Core 5 release notes for a detailed listing of all changes.

SYS-CON Australia News Desk wrote: If one term could be applied to the new Fedora Core 5, it could well be streamlined. The focus of this release seems to be more on the desktop user because of the changes in software management, applications support, and security configuration. The changes make the distribution much easier to use, with a new and simpler install procedure. Greater software functionality has been added with support for .NET using Mono.
